Dassault Rafale B
Rafale B is the two-seat version of the Rafale C, an Air-Superiority Fighter of the French Air Force and likewise the single-seat Rafale M which since 2002 has been deployed with the French Navy on the aircraft carrier "Charles de Gaulle" in the fighter role. The Rafale B was built to replace the two-seat Mirage 2000-5F which over the last few years has seen action in almost all theatre's of war with the Armée de l'Air as a multi-role fighter aircraft. The RAFALE B presents itself as a very modern fighter aircraft with a complete list of electronic guidance units that reminds one of "Star Wars". The cockpit with its futuristic appearance demands a degree of adaptation on the part of the pilot as only a few visual displays replace conventional instrumentation. Only the short side mounted control column reminds one of a joy-stick which together with the thrust lever serves to operate 36 seperate functions. The flight control system, radar, navigation and weapons systems of the Rafale B are monitored by a self diagnostic system that immediately reports faults. Certain conditions for example fuel low - onlv reserve fuel remaining, are announced by a female voice (the well known TV presenter Yolene de la Bigne) to attract the pilots attention. The ejection seat is tilted 35° to the rear to increase the vertical distance between the heart and the brain, enabling higher "g" loads to be tolerated. Optical sensors (OSF) with a video camera and laser telemetry feed an on-board reconnaissance and defensive system with the necessary data to immediately counter all threats. With the new Thales RBE-2 radar the Rafale B can track 20 targets and engage four simultaneously. To this end the pilot has at his disposal the latest and most modern SMART weapons suit currently available. As well as MICA, an air-to-air missile for self protection in aerial combat, two SCALP EG Cruise Missiles and GPS guided bombs can also be carried. Normally however Paveway GBU-12 II LGB - Laser Guided Bombs -or Sagem AASM are carried. The Rafale B can carry six of these 250kg Mk82 Bombs with the most modern laser based guidance systems on under-wing pylons as well as three additional fuel tanks. This configuration can also be built from the REVELL Kit. The first Rafale B's were delivered to the CEAM (Centre 'Expériences Aériennes Militaires) in Mont-de-Marsan in December 2004. The unit is stationed in southern France and belongs to the NATO Tiger's and therefore also takes part in the regularly arranged NATO Tiger Meets. One of the aircraft received a much admired special livery for Tiger Meet 2006 in Albacete in the Spanish region of La Mancha. This aircraft can be built with the decals supplied with this kit. The first operational unit to receive the Rafale B was Escadron de Chase 1/7 „Provence" in St Dizier.
